Rustic and Cozy Winter Plaid Wreath Trio

This has been one of the most beautiful fall seasons around here in recent memory.  The colours continue to hang on to the trees or make beautiful carpets on the lawns and walkways.  The temperatures are getting colder and colder though, and with Halloween now celebrated and behind us, I think it’s okay to start transitioning our mindsets toward winter.

Three Plaid Flannel Wreaths for Winter

One of my favourite patterns and textures for the colder months is a rich dark plaid, especially in a thick soft fabric.  Think of those cozy soft shirts or pajama pants.  And a big plaid scarf is a great way to warm up a fall or winter outfit, or cuddle under on the couch.  With that in mind I’m adding some plaid flannel to our decor with wreaths that can easily stay up from these late fall days and well into the late winter.

Since there wasn’t anything plaid in the house that deserved to be cut up for a craft,  I headed to Value Village and scored some beautiful pj pants for $5.  With so much fabric to play with, I thought a set of three wreaths could be made up in three different ways, and bought three different sizes of embroidery hoops… 5 inch, 6 inch and 8 inch.  Besides that, I had some rustic jingle bells from a clearance bin somewhere sometime for embellishment, and some jute twine for hanging.

The little guy was the simplest, with just a rough square of fabric stretched into the 5 inch hoop, then the remnants trimmed from the back with sharp scissors.  The 6 inch hoop has short strips of flannel tied all the way around it.  About 6 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide.  The great thing about flannel is that you can cut into the edge of the fabric then just tear it the rest of the way, giving you a nice frayed edge for lots of texture.  So tear up a bunch of nice long strips then cut them to about 6 inches.  That gives you enough length to tie a knot around the hoop.  After tying all the strips to the hoop, go back and fluff them out to give the wreath lots of fullness.

To the 8 inch hoop I tied a string of the jingle bells across before wrapping the frame with long strips of flannel, about two inches wide and as long as possible.  I had two 36 inch strips and had about 6 inches to spare.  The end of the wrapping can be secured with a bit of hot glue.

A little crafting to keep your hands busy while watching Netflix.  Rustic and cozy without screaming “Christmas” just yet, but keepable till then.  Why is spellcheck telling me that’s not a word???  And when you’ve finished these up, some of my Canadian blogging friends have also created beautiful wreaths that you can read about below.  Click through the links to see their photos and tutorials… and be ready for lots of eye candy and inspiration!
