Organized closet.  Sometimes I feel like those two words are only true for a few minutes at a time.  But in an attempt to declutter a kid’s bedroom as part of a redecorating project, I turned to IKEA’s ALGOT system and one of my favourites…chalkboard labels, to help make an organized closet a reality.

If you remember, a little while ago I posted an inspiration board for re-doing this boy’s room.  It needed to be de-cluttered a lot, and taken from toddler to tween in terms of style and function.  So while the closet wasn't part of my inspiration board, I think you’ll agree that having a great closet space goes a long way to making the rest of the room tidy and functional too.

The ALGOT system is sold as a laundry room organizing system, but really.  What is a kid’s closet but a constant rotation of laundry?  Everything is visible through the wire bins, and sorting clean laundry away is easy with the labels defining where everything goes.  Also the bins easily slide out and can be used as actual laundry bins too.

Of course you need at least one space for random stuff

The labels for the bins are made with blank switch plate covers.  They only cost about a dollar at your local hardware store.  They’re a good size for a larger label and already have holes in each end for attaching them.  You could use them plain and write on them with a sharpie.  But I wanted a little more texture and interest and painted them with black chalkboard paint.  As I do.

You can spray paint them directly.  Or if you apply the paint with a brush it’s worth it to scuff the plates with a bit of sandpaper first.  Two coats of paint is all you need.

If you season the chalkboard with some chalk first (see this tutorial by Cottage in the Oaks on how to do it),  you will get that authentic chalkboard look.  Then I added the lettering with a white paint sharpie using this font.  If you refer back to this post I did on applying computer font lettering with a paint sharpie, you’ll say how insanely easy it really is!  And they’re simply attached with some transparent twist-ties.

Now the whole closet looks tidy and is easy to keep organized.  Here it is without the sliding doors that usually cover it.  But the reality is that one of the doors is almost always open so it’s nice to have it look like a part of the room decor.
